As the Australian Whole of Government Procurement Coordinator, I am very pleased to release a report on Analysis of Australian and Overseas contracts by the Australian Government. This report analyses over 82,000 Australian Government contracts worth in excess of $41 billion as listed on AusTender, the Australian Government’s central procurement information system.

Below are some interesting statistics, I recommend you read the report for more.

Around $32 billion in federal government contracts were carried out by Australian suppliers in 2011-12, representing 78% of the Commonwealth’s total procurement market (around $41 billion).

The analysis also shows that Australian companies delivered more than 98% of services-based contracts to the Commonwealth, worth nearly $23 billion.

Goods and services supplied to the Commonwealth include management and administrative services, fleet vehicles, and building, construction and manufacturing provisions, and much more.

The top five procurement segments by value were:

  • Management and Business Professionals and Administrative services ($8.4 billion);
  • Commercial and Military and Private Vehicles and their Accessories and Components ($7.8 billion);
  • Structures and Building and Construction and Manufacturing Components and Supplies ($4.5 billion);
  • Politics and Civic Affairs Services ($3.6 billion); and
  • Building and Construction and Maintenance Service ($3.0 billion).

The analysis was carried out by Protiviti for the last two financial years, and covers contracts worth more than $10,000 reported on AusTender. The Commonwealth Procurement Rules require all Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997 (FMA) agencies to report contracts valued above $10,000 on the publicly available AusTender website. This ensures ongoing transparency and accuracy of procurement contract data. AusTender continues to be the primary source for procurement information for the wider government and the private sector. AusTender weekly data updates are available from http://www.tenders.gov.au/?event=public.reports.listCNWeeklyExport and historical data can be found at http://data.gov.au/dataset/historical-australian-government-contract-data/.
